a couple o' weeks later.....

amy has been super about a little recap on the everett home and gift show. wanted to put in my two cents worth, but geez, it's been one thing after another, it seems.

i have to say that the comcast arena crew were really on top of things. those guys really had us in and out of the exhibit space with load-in and load-out in record time. i doubt that anything could have gone any smoother.

kudos to bill bradley with westlake promotions for the bang-up job of advertising. the crowds still seemed a but surprised by the inclusion of local artisans at the show - but no matter. we did our best to wow and pow them!

amy has an amazing hand at vignettes and i just let her do her magic. you can see her talent in the shoots that she took, below. i couldn't have improved on them! and even though our styles of collage are quite different, i was truly amazed at how well they showed together. another compliment to amy's gifts.

thanks to all who came out and supported our efforts. we surely do appreciate YOU!

the monday after...

Thanks to all who came out to see us this past weekend at the Everett Home & Gift Show!  Though it was not as crazy busy as we would have liked, we certainly had a lot of fun - visiting with artist friends, playing with watercolors and found papers, munching on chips and inspiring customers.  This was our first joint venture and we think we may try it again...we'll keep you posted!

In the meantime, make sure you visit our individual blogs on a regular basis to keep your creativity and inspiration well-fueled...

Artist in Action!

Wendy looks serious here but its a ploy...
she really is fun and wild about collage!

In addition to our wonderful booth at the Everett Home & Gift Show (fantastic art at affordable prices!), Wendy will be one of the selected exhibitors doing a live demo each day of the show.
Entitled "Not-So-Serious COllage", Wendy will use a variety of paper fodder to demonstrate collage-making without any adhesive!  How is that possible?!
She promises that it will be a fun upbeat look at collage making - with humor and a serendipitous result.  Join her for 30 minutes of fun and come away with the confidence to make your own masterpiece at home.
Demo Schedule is Friday at 1 pm, Saturday and Sunday at 3:45pm on the Main Event Stage.
Hope to see you there!
P.S. - Don't forget the link up in the right hand corner for free admission tickets!

i was "framed"!!

....and i freely admit it! you see here before you a little stack of framed "love". otherwise know as five sweet little collages and five precious little monotypes....ready (okay, almost ready, still have to put the wires and hangers on the back) for you to scoop up and bring them home! "love" on the wall.......but you will have to come to the everett home & gift show to grab 'em!!

a mess, but i love it!

wendy writes...when i am creating, the studio looks like a tornado hit it. stuff all over -paint and paper flying, sawdust collecting, stuff on the floor to trip over. where is my ruler, has anyone seen my scissors? no, not that pair, the ones with the yellow handles it's a disaster area. and i love it.......but then the time comes when all the hoop-lah dies down and once again, i feel the call to scrub everything top to bottom and start fresh. but, that, dear readers, ain't coming anytime soon!

(ps. top photo, you can guess it. orderly studio. a place for everything and everything in it's place! the bottom shot? uhh, can't find a freakin' thing!)

amy writes...when I am creating, I take over all available is our dining room table...good thing we aren't entertaining soon and that's there's a table in the kitchen for mealtime!

this is my studio space...once everything had a place, but that was a long time ago.  wendy saw my studio space...I think she wants to do an intervention after the show is over!

i have a problem with paper

i love it. i hoard it. i cannot pass free printed material with copping it. i see it - i have to have it. stacks of it. reams of it. all colors. all types. all textures. i crave it. i dream about it. yes, my name is wendy, and i'm a paperaholic!

yes, i love it too...the hues, the smoothness, the roughness, the vintage, the yellowing, the fonts, the graphics, all printed matter.  But I am on the road to recovery...all the paper you see in the black crate in the above picture was in my studio...and now it is in wendy's.  yes, my name is amy and i'm a recovering paperholic!

and just wait until you see what we can do with paper!

i have a headache.....

...but not because of illness, pregnancy, a fainting spell or the perils of working with amy duncan during this feverish time before the show! HAHA!

i have a headache because i am a dork! uhhh, i mean due to fumes....shellac fumes, to be exact. note to self: don't start painting shellac all over the place without first opening the door to the outside - you know, fresh air - circulation! sheesh, what's the matter with me, anyhow?

stuck on squares

I have this thing about seems to be the shape I am most drawn to (and part of the explanation of the name of my company - four corners design...)

In my pursuit of materials to use as a base for my multi-media collages, I often look for wood - nice, thick pieces that be hammered/nailed/wired for attaching found objects.  And I like to look for ideas in unlikely spots - because you don't need expensive supplies or fancy materials to make art.

I found great wooden square frames at the dollar store - unfinished, unadorned, unpretentious - a perfect blank canvas.  Here's one of my completed creations-

Another place where I often look for supplies is Lowe's ( I work in the Paint Dept. so its easy to scope out ideas for projects.)  In the lumber dept., I came across cedar fence post caps - a nice solid finished piece of wood with routed edges.  Here's my first completed collage using a post cap as a base -

There will be plenty of these "square" collages at our booth - all different designs, all different themes.

And did you notice the special promo at the top of the page - you can get two free admission tickets to the show via this online link....gotta love free!

September 23, 2010

i have a scroll saw.....

......and i know how to use it! hubs kindly showed me the ropes and let me loose. oh, lord, was that a mistake? i could scroll wood for days. am putting together some rather funky pieces for the upcoming show - blocks of wood, cut shapes, paint and beeswax. i won't tempt you now - you will just have to show up and see for yourself!

Was a tumble of stone tile...

Now a set of coasters!

Digital reprints of my original multi-media collages turned these plain stone tiles into lovely coasters - one of many gift ideas at our booth...

what hubs found!

my dear hubs, whom i love more than life, has done it again! the man has a gift, i tell ya! i mention something i am on the lookout for, and he finds it at a thrift store or an antique mall for cheap and pronto. that's exactly what he did last week! i told him that i have always wanted an old typewriter - this time for text use in collage and art journals for this upcoming show (nothing can compare to the original type on one of those old-fangled things). for 20 bucks and less than an hour mending a broken table leg,
this is what he came home with, much to my delight. a real, honest-to-goodness underwood no. 5!! i'm so thrilled! i am so gonna have to keep him, wouldn't you agree? (and yes, you can still purchase ribbons for said underwood! yay!)

Good Advice

I have this little collage art piece tacked up on my bulletin board in my office - of course the artist is Miss Wendy - she sent it to me as a thank-you.

But the message is very clear - Just say Yes - whatever it is, if you feel you should hesitate - instead Just say Yes.  I was initially on the fence about participating in the Everett Home & Gift was a new twist on an old idea; it was a different type of venue for artists; I didn't know if I could commit three plus days to a show.  But then I heard from Wendy...and though she didn't say it directly, I knew that I had to Just say Yes

So I did - and now I'm so excited and thrilled about this be involved with the local art community and to be working jointly on a project with a gifted fellow artist...doubling our creativity, dividing the responsibilities.

So I hope that the public (that means you!) also Just say Yes - to mark these dates on your calendar - to travel to Everett - to attend the show - to support the artist community - and to get your holiday shopping done!

BTW...I think Wendy is planning on having mini-collages along the same lines as the one she gave me available at our booth...isn't a mini piece of art much more sincere for a thank you/thinking of you/happy day message than a hallmark card....!

...and it begins!

yes, indeedy! the beginning of a grand collaboration that has me tickled pink! "collage duo" with the fabulously talented amy duncan? really, i couldn't have imagined such a thing happening and here it is! am thrilled that this opportunity presented itself to us. thank you, arts council of snohomish county for your introduction!

as you can see by the photos, i'm busy making plans, making lists, gathering supplies and starting to create some dynamite products for the everett home & gift show! unique accessible art that is affordable - it will be the holidays before you know it and this your chance to get a bunch of your shopping done in one place. all in a jiffy and all handmade. & we won't be the only ones showing at this event, either. many other talented local artists will be joining the fray and the fun.

you won't want miss this event!

A Partnership!

So we've decided to join forces in participating at the Everett Home & Gift Show.  A new venture for each of us - a new venture for the Schack Art Center (who is sponsoring our booth) and a new venture for the art community - encouraging the public to support artists!

To whet your appetite for what to expect from us, here's a sample of Wendy's work that you'll see at our booth in October...
